Regarding Sir M. Visvesvaraya

The first Indian civil engineer was known by his initials, MV (15 September 1861–12/14 April 1962).

On September 15, India commemorates Bharat Ratna Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya's birthday as Engineers' Day. Significant contributions were made to engineering and education by Sir M Visvesvaraya. He is regarded as one of the greatest nation-builders and was instrumental in the development of dams, reservoirs, and hydropower projects in contemporary India. As chief engineer, Sir M Visvesvaraya oversaw the construction of numerous architectural wonders, such as the flood control system in Hyderabad and the Krishna Raja Sagar dam in Karnataka.

The birth anniversary of Sir M. Visvesvaraya was designated Engineers' Day by the Indian government in 1968. Since that time, this day has been observed to recognise and commemorate all engineers who have contributed to and are still contributing to the development of a modern and developed India.

Engineering Day: Importance


Automatic barrier water floodgates were created and patented by Sir M. Visvesvaraya in 1903. Its automated doors would close in the event of a water overflow and was also known as the Block System. It was initially set up in Pune's Khadakvasla reservoir.

Sir M Visvesvaraya was born in a small village close to Chikkaballapur in Karnataka in 1861. He attended Madras University for his undergraduate studies and the College of Science in Pune for his civil engineering training. He founded Bengaluru's University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering in 1917, which is currently known as the Government Engineering College.
